Winter Hair Care Mistakes You Are Making

As the temperature drops, you want to make sure that you’re not only looking after your skin but your hair as well. Cold weather can strip the moisture from your hair and cause it to look and feel dry. Below are some winter hair care mistakes you should avoid doing during the winter months that are very commonly overlooked.

First and foremost, you want to make sure that you don’t go outside with wet hair because the cold air can actually break your hair. Stepping outside with wet hair in cold temperatures can physically cause breakage to your hair strands. It might not be so obvious or apparent if it happens to a couple strands, but over an extended period of time, your hair will start to feel dry. Additionally, if you use hot tools on your hair, make sure that you are applying a protective spray or serum so that your hair doesn’t become weak or brittle.

Similar to how you would normally apply hydrating masks on your skin, you also need to apply hydrating hair masks. Hydrating hair masks will provide more moisture to your hair and will help maintain its texture and volume. Conditioning your hair is especially important in the winter because it helps your hair lock in nutrients. Most people apply conditioner for a short period of time while in the shower and wash it off right after. However, if you don’t allow the conditioner to sit for a few minutes, your hair will not absorb its hydrating properties.

Additionally, while in the shower, you want to avoid washing your hair with really hot water. Hot water is drying for skin as well as your hair. You want to take a shower with warm water that won’t cause too much stress on your hair strands. Make sure to avoid over washing your hair as well. Over washing can lead to dull looking hair and dryness in your scalp. How often you wash your hair is dependent on your hair type; however, it is recommended that you wash your hair every other day if possible.

There are many products that you likely apply to your hair ranging from serums, sprays, hair masks and so on. It is important that you aren’t using too many alcohol-based products on your hair. Alcohol is very drying and can cause a lot of damage to your hair coupled with cold weather. Make sure to read the ingredients from the products you purchase and try to stay away from products that contain ethanol, propanol, isopropyl or benzyl alcohol. These different types of alcohol will strip the moisture from your hair causing it to look dry and damaged.
