Managing psoriasis in general is very stressful and difficult. However, during the cold winter months, psoriasis can act up more than usual. Since there is no cure for psoriasis, the best solution is to alleviate symptoms and to take preventative measures. Psoriasis affects millions of Americans daily and this autoimmune disease can be very painful and debilitating. Therefore, it is important to take steps toward managing your psoriasis during cold weather.

Moisturize
It is very important that you lather a thick moisturizer in order to prevent your skin from becoming dry. A regular moisturizer won’t cut it; you need to apply a moisturizer that has a thick consistency such as shea butter. You want to apply moisturizer before going to bed and leaving your house. Staying moisturized at all times will prevent your skin from becoming irritated.

Minimize your Time Outside
This tip may seem like an obvious one but it is essential in managing your psoriasis. Reducing your time spent outside will reduce your exposure to harsh conditions. When affected by psoriasis you are constantly trying to manage it. Managing it can become increasingly difficult if you are exposing yourself to a variety of weather conditions. Some people are more sensitive to cold weather while others are triggered by hot weather. It is important to learn which type of weather conditions irritate your skin the most.

Avoid Sunburn
If you need to spend time outside, make sure to avoid getting a sunburn. You don’t want to be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Skin damage, such as a sunburn can cause your psoriasis to flare up. This can be extremely painful because you’ll have to treat your sunburn as well as your psoriasis.

Avoid Hot Showers
Taking a warm shower can help soothe your psoriasis, however a hot bath can actually dry out your skin and cause it to flare. You want to be able to calm your psoriasis, therefore taking a cool shower can actually be helpful. Make sure to minimize your bath or showers to only once a day and no longer than 20 minutes. Be aware of the type of body wash you are using, make sure it’s fragrance free. Lastly, use a very gentle cloth similar to the ones used on babies in order to prevent your skin from becoming irritated.

Use a Humidifier
Leaving a humidifier on throughout the night will produce moisture in the air that can soothe your psoriasis. When your skin becomes, dry and cracked that it is when you will feel the most pain. Therefore, a humidifier can help alleviate chapped skin.
