Skincare Routines for Different Skin Types

Skincare routines can look very different based on various factors that include a person’s age, skin tone, and skin type. It is important to know your skin type so that you’re able to cater your skincare routine around it. However, there are some skincare tips that are effective regardless of your skin type. Cleansing your skin with an alcohol-free cleanser while using your fingertips is a great way to remove any oil or dirt sitting on your face. It is recommended to cleanse in the morning and at night before you go to bed. After you have properly cleansed your skin, make sure to pat gently with a soft towel and apply moisturizer. Applying moisturizer while the skin is slightly damp and pores are open will allow the product to fully sink into the skin. Dermatologists also recommend wearing SPF 30 or higher both indoors and outdoors. The sun’s powerful UV rays can still cause damage to your skin despite being inside.

In order to create a skincare routine that will work for you, it is essential that you learn your skin type. Skin types can range anywhere from normal, sensitive, dry, oily, and combination skin. Normal skin is typically clear and is not sensitive to products. For example, if you introduce a new product to your skincare routine, your skin won’t have a negative reaction. Sensitive skin will typically have a reaction to products such as stinging, burning, or getting a rash. When it comes to dry skin, you may feel that your skin is flaky and has a rough texture. At the same time, it can be very itchy. Oily skin on the other hand will look greasy or shiny. This type of skin can be prone to acne since the oil buildup in the pores can cause pimples and breakouts. Lastly, there’s combination skin and this type of skin has areas that are dry while others are oily.

People with sensitive skin should use products that don’t contain alcohol because it can irritate their skin. Make sure to pay special attention to the ingredients in the products you are purchasing so that you’re aware if they are suitable for your skin type. If you have eczema, you would be considered as someone with sensitive skin. Therefore, it is important to patch test products on a small area of your skin to see if there’s a negative reaction. If the product doesn’t cause a negative reaction such as inflammation or a rash, it is likely safe to use on the rest of your skin. If you have dry skin, you want to stay away from products that contain alcohol, retinoids, and alpha hydroxyl acid because they can dry out the skin even further. Those with oily skin should use products that are light and gel based. They should stay away from heavy moisturizes that can potentially clog their pores. For those that have combination skin, it is best to target specific areas of the skin at a time.
