Man with Dark Circles

Dark circles are normally not welcomed as they make us look tired and sleep deprived. There are various reasons to why dark circles appear on your under-eye region. Some of these may include genetics, hyperpigmentation, lack of sleep, allergies, and dehydration. Additionally, the natural aging process can cause dark circles to appear. However, there are preventative measures you can take in order to avoid dark circles.

The first step you can take is to be consistent with applying sunscreen on your entire face but especially under your eyes. The under-eye region is very delicate and when it is exposed to the sun for long periods of time it speeds up collagen break down. Collagen, as you know, is what keeps our skin looking youthful. It is also crucial to use sunglasses whenever possible for extra protection from the sun. Another step you can try is applying a cold compress in the morning or before you go to bed. Apply the cold compress under your eyes for about 10 to 15 minutes. Cold tea bags can also work if you don’t have a cold compress. Also, if you have a sheet face mask, you can put it in the refrigerator and then set it on your face as a compress. Cucumbers can also be very useful since they have skin-lightening and mild astringent properties. Cut up some cucumber slices and place them in the fridge so that when your place them on your eyes they’re nice and cool.

Stimulating the eye region can promote blood flow to the under-eye area. Use an eye massager or eye roller to gently massage that area. You can apply any serum or moisturizer that is in your skin care routine. Although it can be difficult to get 8 hours of sleep every day, sleep deprivation is one of the quickest ways to get dark circles. Try to sleep on your back to avoid fluid from collecting under your eyes. Additionally, regular exercise is very important for blood flow and overall health. Exercising consistently can rejuvenate your skin and reduce its dullness.

Along with exercise, make sure that you’re eating foods that are packed with vitamin C. Food that is rich in vitamin C is a stimulant for collagen. Like mentioned previously, collagen is what keeps our skin looking bright. Foods that contain vitamin C are berries, kale, mango, melon, lemon, guava, and much more. If you have an iron deficiency you are prone to dark circles, therefore it is important to get iron through pills and foods such as lentils, beans, lean red meat, and chicken. You should also be drinking plenty of water throughout the day in order to stay fully hydrated. Lastly, it is essential that you are careful removing your make-up especially on your under-eye region. If you use make-up wipes do not pull or tug when removing make-up. All of these steps can help you avoid getting dark circles and help you look rejuvenated!
