Botox vs. Facial Filler

Woman Getting Botox Injection

Deciding between getting Botox or Facial Filler can be confusing if you don’t quite understand the difference. Below is a brief summary of the main difference patients need to be aware of. A good place to start at is identifying if you want to get rid of wrinkles or add volume to your face where collagen is lacking. Once you’re clear with your objective it will be easier to narrow down which treatment option better suits your needs. Both are great options in improving your overall appearance with little to no downtime.

Botox Cosmetic Injectables

Botox is designed to reduce fine lines and wrinkles that are typically caused over time by facial expressions. Essentially, Botox reduces the activity of muscles that causes wrinkles to begin with. In other words, it relaxes the muscle being injected. Botox is the preferred treatment for wrinkles and fine lines because it evens out the skin where the wrinkles are apparent. It targets wrinkles that are caused by sleep, as well as laugh and lip lines. Additionally, Botox is typically injected above the eyebrows to reduce the lines on the forehead and help eliminate crow’s feet. The types of wrinkles that are mainly treated by Botox are those that are advanced. In other words, wrinkles that are deep and prominent. Botox can last anywhere for 3 to 6 months. If you’re looking for longevity, then you will have to schedule follow up treatments as needed. Both Botox and Facial Fillers have the same minimal side effects that may include mild bruising, redness or irritation.

Facial Fillers

Fillers are designed to restore volume or structure to the face. If you’re looking to add some volume to your cheeks or get plump lips, then facial fillers is the appropriate treatment. As we age, the collagen in our face depletes and our skin begins to sag. Facial fillers are a perfect way to restore the fullness in areas of the face that could use the extra volume. Fillers can also be used to reduce the appearance of scars on one’s face and can help with under eye circles. Facial Fillers tend to last longer than Botox, anywhere from 6 months to a year. The type of filler as well as site injected also makes a difference with longevity.
