Acne is a widespread skin condition characterized by blocked pores, pimples, cysts, and other lesions on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. Affecting over 17 million people in the U.S., it is the most common skin disorder in the country. While acne is most prevalent among teenagers, adults of any age can experience it. Though not life-threatening, acne can lead to physical scarring and emotional distress. Fortunately, various treatments are available to improve skin appearance and prevent future breakouts.
Book OnlineWhat Causes Acne?
Acne forms when the pores of the skin become clogged due to excess oil production, bacteria buildup, or the shedding of dead skin cells, which irritate the pores and hair follicles. When these substances accumulate in the hair follicle, they create a soft plug that causes the follicle wall to bulge, leading to a lesion.
The exact cause of excess oil production remains unclear, but it is thought to stem from a combination of factors such as hormones, bacteria, genetics, and certain medications. Contrary to common myths, foods like chocolate and dirt do not cause acne.
Other Forms of Skin Inflammation
Acne symptoms are most often seen on the face, neck, shoulders, back, or chest, though they can appear anywhere on the skin. These flare-ups may come and go and can worsen due to hormonal or environmental triggers like pregnancy, menstruation, greasy cosmetic or hair products, high humidity, or certain medications.
Although acne typically doesn’t result in serious health issues, it can lead to permanent scarring and emotional distress for individuals of all ages. If over-the-counter treatments do not effectively manage acne or if scarring occurs as the acne clears, it’s important to seek professional dermatologic care.
