Fungal Skin Infection

Many people may be unaware that fungi can actually live on your skin. It is also possible that fungal infections can be inhaled and live in your lungs. Fungi exists in many forms such as yeast, mold, and mildew. It can be found just about anywhere but doesn’t necessarily mean it is dangerous. A common skin infection is called Tinea otherwise known as ringworm which affects the feet, groin, and scalp. This infection is easily contagious and can be transferred through shower floors, locker rooms, or around swimming pools. Other fungal infections can affect the mouth, throat, and genitals also known as athlete’s foot, jock itch, and yeast infection. When these areas are affected, it is typically because the skin is wet or moist for extended periods of time. During the summer, it is especially important to keep the skin as dry as possible to avoid fostering any skin infections.

Fungal infections can cause irritation, scaly skin, redness, itching, swelling, and blisters. It is important to pay attention to any burning or discoloration that may occur. When it comes to ringworm, you will notice a circular rash appear that is likely going to be very itchy. Although ringworm is contagious, it can be easily treated with antifungal cream. Ringworm on the scalp can cause localized bald patches that appear red and will feel tender. On the other hand, athlete’s foot will cause a stinging sensation between your toes or around the soles of your feet. The skin will start to look cracked and can spread to other parts of your body such as your hands or groin area.

There are various practices you can engage in to help prevent fungal skin infections. First and foremost, it is important to practice good hygiene. You want to make sure that you’re wearing clean clothes on a daily basis. It is equally important to not share towels or under garments with others. After showering or getting out a swimming pool, make sure to dry off properly. Always wear sandals when walking around in public areas and before using any equipment at the gym, make sure to properly wipe it down. When camping or hiking, stay clear of animals that may have signs of fungal infection or animals that are known to carry diseases.

Fungal infections are pretty common and in most cases, are treatable. It is important to pay attention to your skin and notice any irregularities in order to treat the skin as soon as possible. This will prevent infections from becoming rashes that can spread throughout the body. There are a variety of skin fungus treatments that can be purchased at your local pharmacy if you suspect a fungal infection. They are sold as creams, ointments, pills, powders, sprays, and shampoos. Fungal infections are preventable if you take precaution and keep your skin as clean as possible especially during those hot summer days that are fast approaching.
